I have a secret. I love eclairs (shhh!). Ok so not such a dramatic secret really, perhaps more of a vice. I love the choux pastry and the creamy filling and the frosted top. So of course when I read in one of my favorite magazines that Fauchon's eclairs were rated number 1 out of a a list of about 5 or so, I knew I had to go and try it out and compare it to my favorite caramel eclair from La Maison du Chocolat.
Ignore the Mille Feuille that is also added into my box of treats from Fauchon. Just look at those lovely eclairs.
La Maison du Chocolat (MC) makes three types of eclairs, Milk chocolate, caramel & dark chocolate while Fauchon has a slew of flavors (which unfortunately didn't seem to be on hand the day I went), but I stuck to the 2 that they have in common to conduct my unofficial taste test: Caramel & chocolate.
At first sight the Fauchon eclair really "tape à l'oeil" as they say in French (attracts the eye). They are shinier and the chocolate eclair has these lovely little gold "rocks" making these a great choice to top off an elegant dinner party or an upscale afternoon tea.
But what I also noticed is the color difference between the caramel from la Maison du Chocolat (MC) and Fauchon, with the former being considerably darker in color. Next thing to notice is difference in size. The Fauchon eclair is "petit" especially when plated next to the MC eclair.
Now let's talk taste. For me, and my husband with whom I shared this lovely experience, the chocolate was richer in the MC eclair - I guess it pays to be a chocolatier. It was darker and more profound. When you look at them both side by side though, you can't really see any difference.
My last noteworthy comparison is one of price. I have to say that I was already feeling the pinch when MC raised their price by 10 centimes but every time I get an eclair and take a bite, I forget all about the price. Fauchon's eclair is 40 centimes more expensive.
I am not going to lie to you, if someone put the two macarons in front of me I would jump all over the Fauchon macaron which just is so appealing to the eye - who am I kidding, I'd eat them both. No, seriously, for me I think I will stick with my caramel eclair from la Maison du Chocolat. One of my sinful Paris pleasures. I will however have to go back and try out all those other colorful flavors I have heard about from Fauchon.
